‘Buddy Holly’

Cand il asculti pe Buddy Holly ai impresia ca Beatles sau Rolling Stones cantau deja in anii ‘50 si ca muzica lor e mult mai veche. Desi celebritatea pentru Buddy Holly a durat numai 3 ani, din 1957 pana in 1959, aceasta nu a aparut de nicaieri. A inceput sa realizeze inregistrari inca de la 13 ani, in propria casa, intre 1954 si 1955 colaboreaza cu o casa de discuri mica pentru cateva cantece country, iar la reprezentatiile sustinute in orasul natal Lubock este descoperit de Eddie Crandall si i se cere sa trimita un demo la Decca Records, care, fosrte interesata de noul curent rockabilly, ii ofera lui Holly un contract.
Pe 24 si 25 septembrie are loc sesiunea de inregistrari pentru “That’ll be the day” primul number one al artistului atat in S.U.A. cat si in Marea Britanie. Piesa a fost inspirata de filmul “The searchers” in care John Wayne rostea de mai multe ori replica “That’ll be the day”, un film pe care artistul si ceilalti membrii ai trupei The Crickets il vazusera impreuna.

A fost ultimul single lansat de Buddy Holly in timpul vietii sale, in 1958. Un cantec rockabilly care era mult mai bine primit in Marea Britanie decat in Statele Unite, dar cu toate astea ramane un hit preluat ulterior de artisti precum Connie Francis sau Cliff Richard.

O orchestratie deosebita cu un instrument muzical specific muzicii clasice care imita sunetul clopoteilor, iar percutia este realizata prin bataia palmelor. Buddy Holly a avut o influenta majora asupra artistilor care s-au lansat de dupa 1960. Cover-uri dupa “Everyday” au facut, Don McLean, Erasure, Pearl Jam sau Deep Purple.

Desi cariera lui Buddy Holly a durat numai un an si jumatate, pana la tragicul accident din 3 februarie 1959, cantaretul este recunoscut ca fiind unul din pionierii rock and roll-ului, creatia sa influentandu-i pe multi artisti ca Bob Dylan sau The Beatles. Cover-ul facut dupa “Not fade away” de cei de la Rolling Stones a fost primul mare succes al acestei formatii.

Unul dintre cele mai tari cantece, poate nu atat de promovate si cunoscute, insa ca in toata muzica sa Buddy Holly arata un rafinament si o simplitate care in opinia mea fac din el un artist genial. Probabil ca, daca nu s-ar fi stins atat de devreme intr-un accident de avion, ar fi fost la fel de celebru ca Beatles. “You’re the one” a fost scris de Buddy Holly in 30 de minute ca urmare a unui pariu de care i s-a adus aminte, in timp ce se afla in direct la o emisiune de radio, Buddy Holly fiind ajutat de doi dj ai postului de radio din Lubock, care au asigurat percutia batand din palme.
