Imaginile sunt din filmul “Rock around the clock” (1956). Ca orice curent nou si care se dovedea foarte liber in exprimare, rock and roll-ul a intrat in conflict cu mentalitatile conservatoare si rigide din acea vreme. Daca tinerii se identificau cu acest curent nou, cei care detineau puterea de decizie au incercat pe cat posibil sa impuna restrictii. Astfel The Times a avut numeroase articole in care afirma ca tinerii si muzica rock and roll n-ar trebui lasati de capul lor si lauda supravegherea si interventiile politiei la aceste evenimente. In urma unor incidente concertele cu muzica swing, twist sau rock and roll au fost interzise de primari, in orase ca New Jersey, Atlanta, San Antonio sau Boston.
Aceast curent muzical era considerata un gunoi care nu facea altceva decat sa atraga scandalgii. Chiar Frank Sinatra sustinea ca aceasta muzica e cantata si scrisa in cea mai mare parte de cretini si este muzica de capatai a delincventilor, in timp ce New York Times si USA Confidential titrau: o forma muzicala canibala si tribala, respectiv, un curent care recruteaza delincventi pentru a asigura mafiei generatia viitoare. “Rock around the clock” este hitul despre care critica muzicala afirma ca a impus genul rock and roll in cultura americana. Era un imn al generatiei tinere de la jumatatea secolului 20. A fost scris de Max C. Freedman si (dupa unele opinii) James E. Myers si lansat de Sonny Dae and His Knights. Bill Haley and The Comets au realizat inregistrarea in 1954, dar se parea ca piesa avea sa fie un esec comercial. In 1955 piesa este folosita la inceputul filmului Blackboard Jungle si devine primul hit rock and roll care atinge pozitia 1 in clasamentul pop Billboard.
