Ben E. King & The Drifters lansau piesa “Save the last dance for me” in 1960. Este unul din cele 5 hituri ale artistului care au ajuns pe primul loc in topul Billboard (3 saptamani in clasamentul pop si o saptamana in clasamentul r&b). Cantecul a fost recompensat si cu un premiu Grammy.
In prezent Ben E. King este implicat in actiuni caritabile in cadrul fundatiei “Stand By Me”. Anual organizeaza un turneu de golf cu vedete pentru strangerea de fonduri care ajung ulteior la cei in nevoie.

A atins locul intai in topul r&b atat in anul lansarii cat si in 1986 cand piesa a fost relansata si a fost inclusa pe coloana sonora a filmului cu acelasi titlu.

Ben E. King (Benjamin Earl Nelson), compozitor, cantaret si producator a devenit cunoscut incepand cu 1959 impreuna datorita colaborarii cu The Drifters cu care a inregistrat o serie de cantece de succes. Cu toate acestea nu i s-a permis sa mearga in turnee sau la aparitiile televizate, nici nu i s-a recunoscut contributia asa cum ar fi dorit si, dupa foarte putin timp (1960), a intrerupt colaborarea cu The Drifters. Grupul, considerat foarte instabil datorita managementului care impunea destul de multe restrictii membrilor grupului, s-a stins incet, incet, iar in 1967, odata cu mutarea in Marea Britanie a iesit complet de pe prima scena a muzicii.
